Seasonal Activity Proving Key for Food Retailers but April Looks Set to be a Challenge Growth at Grocery Multiples for the 12 weeks to 22nd March picked up to +7.9% YoY buoyed up by Mothering Sunday and Easter sales.  Easter week itself (w/e 22/03/07) saw 18% YoY gains versus a non-Easter week last year but earlier on in the month weekly performances were more modest at +6.7% for w/e 8/03 and just +2.9% for w/e 15/3.

Growth within total Grocery stood at +6.2% YoY in the 4 weeks to 23 rd February with like for like growth, at +4.2%* year on year, being one of the strongest performances seen in the past 12 months, according to the latest grocery retail performance analysis released today by market research company, Nielsen.

Morrisons continues to outstrip market growth with almost 1 million more shoppers than this time last year
While Christmas is  now a distant memory for most retailers the competition for shopper spend remains intense.  Nielsen reports that 12 weekly growth in the grocery retail sector (for the 12 weeks 26th January) stood at + 6.4% year on year with the most recent 4 weeks being slightly ahead of this at + 6.7%.

Whilst eBay and Amazon remain the most popular retailers online in the UK, the ten fastest growing are all high street brands. ‘Presents, ‘gifts’ and ‘shopping’ are amongst the terms most closely associated with Christmas today.
